The Art of Hosting: Elena & Josh’s Custom Kitchen Island

Elena & Josh are adventurous in many different ways: from traveling around the world to hosting cozy coffee breaks with close friends; from cooking full-course meals to two-step dancing; from working as data scientists to reading in bed before falling asleep.

This lust for life is what brought them to Obra. After getting married on a beautiful autumn evening in 2025, the couple moved to Lockhart, TX, a stone’s throw from Austin, and began the journey of turning their house into a home.

This process quickly turned into a detailed project for improvements and fresh additions to their lovely home. One of their must-haves? An Obra Custom Kitchen Island, tailored for their rituals, practical for their everyday use, and specially designed for their unique personality.

Elena & Josh’s Custom Kitchen Island

Elena & Josh live a life full of love – for each other, shared between friends and family, devoted to their beautiful pups, Piper and Otter, and many more.

Taking all of this passion into consideration, the Obra team designed, built and installed their Custom Kitchen Island. Compact, sophisticated, cozy yet spacious: these are some of the words that can be used to describe their piece.

Crafted from Oak wood, Benjamin Moore Spellbound 1659 paint, and Rubio Monocoat pure finish, their Custom Kitchen Island is perfect for hosting multi-course meals paired with the perfect playlist, entertaining guests during afternoon tea breaks, having thoughtful conversations while cooking homemade dishes, and having a relaxing glass of wine in the evening.

Elena & Josh’s island features a wine rack, a baker’s cabinet, open shelves for display, and a conversation-style flush extension countertop – every detail 100% designed around their rituals and the activities they love.

Custom furniture: built for space, designed for personality

At Obra, we believe that a custom piece of furniture should do more than just optimize a space – it should serve as an extension of our clients’ unique personalities, cultures, and hobbies.

For Elena and Josh, this translates into a love for hosting, cooking, baking and spending time with their loved ones. As they look forward to having children and growing their family, their Custom Kitchen Island is already evolving to meet these new, beautiful purposes as well.

Their Obra Island was put to work immediately. Minutes after installation, the couple was already hand-pressing tortillas, one of the most cherished Mexican traditions. Beyond traditional meal-prepping, Elena uses their Custom Kitchen Island to craft her own ice cream, exploring unique flavors and ingredients - sometimes sourced from their garden.
